3:5 / The meaning of snare is uncertain. Some translate “wooden missile,” such as a boomerang, that strikes the bird, which then falls into a net. Others read “throw-net.” Most agree that trap refers to a net that springs up from the ground.

3:6 / One LXX minuscule (534) correctly reads “battle” for city.

3:7 / On the basis of its form and vocabulary, many commentators hold that this verse is a later addition from the Deuteronomic editors. However, it contributes greatly in its present setting, and thus the argument is not very significant to our interpretation.

3:9 / The LXX reads “Assyria” instead of Ashdod, but Amos nowhere else mentions Assyria, and the MT is supported by the Tg. and Vg.

The LXX presupposes that the MT reads “Mount Samaria” instead of the “mountains of Samaria.” Samaria was located on a plain, with mountains some miles distance surrounding it, but there is no compelling reason to change the MT text.

3:12 / The final phrase of this oracle is unintelligible in the Hb. and has been variously emended and interpreted. The RSV reading represents one widely-held view: “with the corner of a couch and part of a bed”; the NIV reading represents the other. Probably the NIV is nearest the original intention of the garbled text.

Some commentators have attached this verse to the oracle in 3:9–11, but the messenger formula in v. 12a indicates the beginning of a new oracle. Others have maintained that v. 12d–f begins the oracle in 3:13–15, but Hb. oracles do not normally begin with participles. Verse 12 should thus be seen as an independent unit. The oracle is an expanded māšāl, a wisdom saying, which illumines one thing by comparing it with another. The form is often found in the book of Proverbs (Prov. 25:25–26; 26:7–11 etc.).
